چکیده

We study a generalization of the Steiner tree problem, where we are given a weighted network G together with a collection of k subsets of its vertices and a root r. We wish to construct a minimum cost network such that the network supports one unit of flow to the root from every node in a subset simultaneously. The network constructed does not need to support flows from all the subsets simultaneously. We settle an open question regarding the complexity of this problem for k = 2, and give a 2 approximation algorithm that improves over a (trivial) known 2-approximation. Furthermore, we prove some structural results that prevent many well-known techniques from doing better than the known O(logn)-approximation. Despite these obstacles, we conjecture that this problem should have an O(1)-approximation. We also give an approximation result for a variant of the problem where the solution is required to be a path. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems, G.2.2 Graph Theory

Worst-Case Mechanism Design via Bayesian Analysis

Budget feasible mechanism design is the study of procurement combinatorial auctions in which the sellers have private costs to produce items, and the buyer (auctioneer) aims to maximize her valuation function on a subset of purchased items under the budget constraint on the total payment. One of the most important questions in the field is “which valuation domains admit truthful budget feasible...

A note on concentration of submodular functions

We survey a few concentration inequalities for submodular and fractionally subadditive functions of independent random variables, implied by the entropy method for self-bounding functions. The power of these concentration bounds is that they are dimension-free, in particular implying standard deviation O( √ E[f ]) rather than O( √ n) which can be obtained for any 1Lipschitz function of n variab...

On the Complexity of Computing an Equilibrium in Combinatorial Auctions

We study combinatorial auctions where each item is sold separately but simultaneously via a second price auction. We ask whether it is possible to efficiently compute in this game a pure Nash equilibrium with social welfare close to the optimal one. We show that when the valuations of the bidders are submodular, in many interesting settings (e.g., constant number of bidders, budget additive bid...

Approximating Some Network Design Problems with Node Costs

We study several multi-criteria undirected network design problems with node costs and lengths with all problems related to the node costs Multicommodity Buy at Bulk (MBB) problem in which we are given a graph G = (V,E), demands {dst : s, t ∈ V }, and a family {cv : v ∈ V } of subadditive cost functions. For every s, t ∈ V we seek to send dst flow units from s to t on a single path, so that

A Constant Factor Approximation for the Single Sink Edge Installation Problem

We present the first constant approximation to the single sink buy-at-bulk network design problem, where we have to design a network by buying pipes of different costs and capacities per unit length to route demands at a set of sources to a single sink. The distances in the underlying network form a metric. This result improves the previous bound of O(log |R|), where R is the set of sources. We...
